Funnily enough, the first thought that came to my head when reading this topic was, "they probably eat creep" lol. Really though, I read in the Dark Templar Saga (book 3 called 'Twilight'), that the zerg ate fallen warriors that were left behind after a huge battle between zerg, terran, and protoss. As to whether or not they ate their own kind while having these options, I still wouldn't be too surprised.

one would think the zerg didnt actaully need food. since they are all mind controlled by the overmind. one would think he would stop them from having any kind of self want or thought like pain pleasure hunger and thirst, there for using the zerg who probably adapted to going long times without food, untill they die of hunger and then simply replacing the dead ones. the only ones i see actaully needing food would be the cerebrates and the overminds and i doubt cerebrates need or eat food since they live forever they probably die of hunger all the time. but then again they could have evolved beyond needing food and sustain themselves chemically threw filter feeding

This was answered I believe long ago in a Q&A and in the strategy guide.
Minerals are used for radiation agaisnt the eggs to make them hatch faster. Gas is used the same way. And don't let the pictures fool you, Just because the drone in sc2 is stuffing the mienrals and eating it in it's potrait, It's just stuffing it in there to spit it back out at the hatchery. The zerg eat eachother and the creep. That's all. ![]() "Power Overwhelming..." Your momma sucks so bad at starcraft, She played her hardest and she got banned for smurfing. |

Zergs' mouths are for tearing the flesh off of their enemies and roaring the fear of the Swarm for all to hear.
Ive always thought that Zerg do not eat at all. They are born from the Hacthery with the nutrients needed to survive 12 hours or so, when they die, they are simply absorbed back into the creep. This is about the only piratical use i can think of for creep: its like a giant feeding bloom that decomposes all dead Zerg biomass in order to recycle it. Cycle: 1) The Hacthery process resources both in the form of readily available minerals and gas gathered by drones (The Energy) and nutrients gathered by the creep spread from fallen Zerg and the land itself (The Matter). 2) The energy and matter components are used to spawn larva, wicth in turn morph into whatever Zerg strain the Queen deems necessary. 3) The Zerg fight to defend and expand the Hive Cluster, thus allowing the Creep to spread and new natural resources can be found. As long as there is no outside military threat, the cycle is almost self sustaining. That explains why the Zerg Swarm can stay idle on a planet like Char for long periods of time: without need to defend themselves, fewer warrior strains are spawned and the general energy usage of the Hive is kept low. Conversely, during times of war natural resources must be found and assimilated rapidly to sustain the warriors.
Mothership: like taking the most perfect wedding cake, with beefy Zealots and Stalkers holding up the base, all the way to light, airy Carriers on the top tier, and putting a little plastic Elvis statue on top. Big, flashy, but dead of lung cancer at 35.

They would not have a mouth if a mouth would not be needed.
You can say that their mouths are only used to shred their prey, but if this would be its only purpose, the zergs would not have a throat, a larynx and all that stuff that is used to swallow and make some sounds, so their "mouth" would actually not be a mouth, just an amount of teeths... My thought is that they just eat random animals... |

I've always thought of them as being similar to the sandworms in Dune. They just extract nutrients from the ground, or maybe more specifically, the creep?
